More From Charlie Greer!

Hi Allan. Long-time fan, and addicted WABC

Thanks to Charlie Greer's son
(also named Charlie Greer), I received numerous Charlie Greer air checks
and memorabilia
that
I think have never been heard or seen on your site (or anywhere else on the
Internet)!
After much research and audio restoration
work, I have finished my Charlie Greer project and
I would like to donate all of the material to you for use on musicradio77.com so
everyone can enjoy and learn more about Charlie.
Thanks to David, here is his "Charlie Greer Project"!

Notes about the Charlie Greer air check on WABC from 5:00 to
5:25 a.m. on Monday, November 11, 1963:
This is an air check of Charlie doing "The Satellite Show". Charlie called it "a
brand new show every Monday morning from 4 until 6 o'clock." [n.b. I have not
been able to find any information about "The Satellite Show". It does not appear
on any schedule, and I don't know how long the program remained in production.
To my ear, the program sounds as if it was pre-recorded. It's mainly a "this
is/that was" style of show, with Charlie making some wisecracks before or after
a song. Also, during the air check, Charlie says that he is on mornings at 11
a.m. -- but the schedule displayed on musicradio77.com shows Bob Dayton on at 11
a.m. as of August, 1963.]
There are no spots during this air check, only PSAs.
Running time: 12 minutes 15 seconds; music is scoped.
Air check tape was a cassette dub of an open reel tape.
It was restored by David Keller, who also scoped the music.
Charlie Greer - WABC - 11-11-1963 - 5 to 5:25AM
Notes about the Charlie Greer air check on WABC from 1:30 to
1:55 a.m. on Tuesday, January 5, 1965:
There were no commercials in this segment, but there were several PSAs,
including two read by newsman Jimmy Wallington.
Running time: 9 minutes 50 seconds; music was scoped on the original tape.
Air check tape was a cassette dub of an open reel tape.
It was restored by David Keller.
Charlie Greer - WABC - 1-5-1965 - 1:30 to 1:55AM
Notes about the Charlie Greer air check on WABC from 5:00 to
5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 1965:
This air check has an unusual sound for WABC. There is a much different pace and
style compared to what you would hear during the day, including comedic audio
drop-ins. In addition, there are no spots; only PSAs and promos. The newscast at
5:25 was done by Jimmy Wallington. It includes a U.S. Department of Agriculture
fruit and market report, recorded over the phone, that runs for 2 minutes!
Running time: 20 minutes; music is scoped.
Air check tape was a cassette dub of an open reel tape.
It was restored by David Keller, who also scoped the music.
Charlie Greer - WABC - 1-26-1965 - 5 to 5:30 AM
Notes about the Charlie Greer air check on WABC from 5:30 to
6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 1965:
This air check is the last half hour of Charlie's show, found on a different
tape than the 5:00 to 5:30 a.m. air check. Towards the end of the show, Charlie
makes a couple of comments about his wife, a.k.a."Queen Kong", which is a
long-time Charlie Greer gag. There is only one commercial, a 60-second spot for
Doublemint Gum, at 5:54, just before Jimmy Wallington does the news.
Running time: 21 minutes 15 seconds; music is scoped.
Air check tape was a cassette dub of an open reel tape.
It was restored by David Keller, who also scoped the music.
Charlie Greer - WABC - 1-26-1965 - 5:30 to 6:00 AM
Notes about the Charlie Greer air check on WABC from 12:00 am
to 1:22 a.m. on Monday, October 23, 1967:
This air check opens at approximately 11:57 p.m., with news already in progress.
Charlie's show starts at midnight, with newscaster Ed Jordan doing a live read
of a Dension Clothes spot (after the news and WABC legal ID).
In this air check, Charlie spends quite a bit of time discussing two events in
his personal life: His being accosted and harassed at knifepoint on a New York
City street, and his being fined $6,300 by AFTRA (The American Federation of
Television and Radio Artists, a labor union).
The nearly hour and a half period of the air check has only one sponsor, Denison
Clothes. The same Dension spot is presented four times, all live reads: The one
at the show open, which runs 72 seconds; Charlie's rendition at 12:16 a.m.,
which runs 96 seconds; one read by newscaster Tony Rousseau before doing the
12:55 a.m. newscast, which runs 65 seconds; and another one done by Charlie at
1:18 a.m., which runs 81 seconds. (Charlie embellishes the copy, which makes his
versions of the spot run quite long!) There are lots of PSAs (public service
announcements) and promos during the air check, featuring various WABC jocks.
Running time: 37 minutes 40 seconds; music is scoped.
Air check tape was a cassette dub of an open reel tape. The cassette dub contained several discontiguous parts of the show, which were reassembled as part of the
restoration. This results in missing material from several parts of the air
check, which are obvious while listening.
The restoration was done by David Keller, who also scoped the music that
remained intact after the air check was reassembled.
Charlie Greer - WABC - 10-23-1967 12 Midnight to 1:22 AM
Notes about the Charlie Greer air check on WABC from 2:12 am
to 2:42 a.m. on Sunday, August 3, 1969:
This is a tighter, fairly "no nonsense" segment than those of earlier years.
There are three different Dension Clothes spots, all live reads, during the half
hour period of the air check. The spots run 74, 57, and 95 seconds respectively.
There is a Palisades Amusement Park spot just before Jim Branch does the news at
2:25 a.m., with Jim doing the spot's tag.
Running time: 17 minutes 30 seconds; music is scoped.
Air check tape was a cassette dub of an open reel tape. The air check sounds as if it was
recorded off the board, as there is no reverb and no compression of audio
levels.
It was restored by David Keller, who also scoped the music.
